ToggleThe role of the supervisor at the US Open
The US Open is one of the largest sporting events, attracting tens of thousands of spectators to a limited space every day. Over two weeks, around 70,000 people participate, which, in turn, presents organizers with enormous logistical challenges. The teams servicing the courts have key tasks as they ensure the smooth flow of the event and maintain order. I had the opportunity to observe the work of one of these teams.
There are 17 courts, and up to four matches are played daily on each one. Therefore, the dedicated service teams must take care of court preparation and maintain order among the spectators. The role of the supervisor in these teams was particularly evident during the morning briefing.
Team briefing – The practical role of the supervisor
At 9:30, an hour and a half before the first match, the supervisor, dressed in a red shirt, held a briefing. Each team member received specific tasks and instructions for handling any problems that might arise. Moreover, the supervisor emphasized the importance of teamwork and the responsibility of each team member. At the end of the meeting, the supervisor gave each worker a high-five, which created a positive atmosphere and further motivated the team.
TWI principles in team management
Watching this meeting, I was reminded of the principles of TWI (Training Within Industry) Job Relations, developed in the USA in 1944. According to these principles, the role of the supervisor is to ensure that employees perform their tasks at the right time and in the right way. Importantly, they should carry out their duties with enthusiasm and commitment. This approach was evident at the US Open, where supervisors not only assigned tasks but also built strong relationships with employees.
Practical takeaways for business
The observations from the US Open can easily be applied to the business world. The role of the supervisor determines whether a team operates smoothly and efficiently. A key aspect of management is motivating employees and creating a positive work atmosphere. It is important to remember that, regardless of the industry, people are the most valuable resource in an organization. A skilled supervisor knows how to harness this resource to ensure the team achieves the best results.
Therefore, it is worth investing in programs like TWI, which have supported management for over 80 years. It is through such programs that the role of the supervisor becomes the foundation of organizational efficiency.
Conclusion – The role of the supervisor in achieving success
Whether at the US Open or in companies, the role of the supervisor is crucial to success. Supervisors responsible for teams can determine whether processes run smoothly and whether organizational goals are met as planned. Therefore, investing in the development of managerial skills leads to better outcomes and more effective team management.
